Editor's note: This article was originally published 10 years ago to introduce Ben De Gabriel as the new owner of E and J Winter, Bolton Scale Models. We are proud to be celebrating 10 years since buying the business! A milestone few could achieve by the age of 40
Ben De Gabriel has steam running through his veins. A passion he shares with his own young boys.
"My father thinks I should have been into boats. I have a Bolton plan for him too."
In his early years as a junior member of the Bathurst Miniature Railway, he was tasked to refill the locos with char and water at the station, before learning to drive a 3½" gauge steam locomotive.

Ben is the new face of E and J Winter, Bolton Scale Models. You may recognise his name for his role as AALS Treasurer or his face from the track. When he is at leisure he can be a talkative soul. He enjoys standing at the lathe or by the mill, working on his NSWGR 24 Class. "I chose to keep the full name in homage to the legacy of Ernest and Joan Winter and O Burnaby Bolton and look forward to commemorating the centenary of the Bolton legacy in 2022."

He started his working life as an apprentice radio fitter mechanic. Work brought him to Wagga Wagga in 2000 where he became an active member of WWSME serving on their committee in various roles for seven years. In 2003 he authored the 25 year history of the club.
In 2004 he moved back to Bathurst, following his career and his heart, marrying Theresa who was established in Bathurst at the time. His weekends are spent in the garden, workshop or at the Orange Society of Model Engineers' track, mowing the lawns or rewiring the club loco. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and coal is the best kind of dirt.
His projects include a Sweet Pea, freelance diesel, Simplex, electric tram (to keep the boys busy at the track) and now a NSWGR 24 Class. His passion for Model Engineering thrives on learning from 'the masters' who have been there before.
It has been a steep learning curve since buying the business but every day is full of new challenges and new discoveries. 2017 has brought with it the acquisition of the materials division of Miniature Steam Pty. Ltd, an opportunity to consolidate the product range and streamline the online business.
"The model engineering fraternity is full of passion and generosity. Members and mentors, giving back to the hobby they love. I hope that through my involvement, the hobby will continue from strength to strength, engaging with all generations for the future."
Ben is very grateful to the team who helped him move the business from Kelly Maybury's home in Kurri Kurri.
